There a few players that play their entire footballing careers in the lower divisions, before eventually stepping up to have a crack in the premiership. Nicky Shorey (now of Fulham) springs to mind, when you consider he played in all four divisions for Reading.

But a certain Right winger known by the name as Wade, has challenged that theor. Elliot was spotted playing for Bashley, near Southampton by a former Bournemouth player Jimmy Case. He was at university studying and was playing non league football. He was offered a trial, and instantly impressed, prompting the Cherries to sign him for £5,000 what a snip!

Wing Play: Wade Elliott got the fans off their seats

He would soon go on to make 220 appearances for Bournemouth, scoring 31 goals. In his first full season at the club, he won the player of the year award. But due to financial difficulty, it was proving impossible for the Cherries to tie their players down to long term deals and once interest from Championship side Burnley became concrete, Wade joined at the end of the 2004-05 season.

Significantly, it was an FA Cup match, where Bournemouth actually played Burnley that sprung Turf Moor boss Steve Cotterill to sign the winger.

Wade’s world has changed dramtically since his Bournemouth days, he is now playing regulary in Premiership for Burnley and has amassed over 195 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals.

But it was his wonder goal in the Play off final last year that beat Sheffield United 1-0 to promote Burnley to the top tier of English football for the first time since 1976!
